Dil Bechara ( The helpless heart) is a coming of age Indian romantic drama film. It is based on John Green’s novel ” The fault in our stars “.

Dil bechara is not a commercial movie with lot of masala songs, fight scenes etc., but is a sweet, happy to go story of two incomplete souls struggling to live. Debut director, Mukesh has tried to portray their struggle, with themselves and everyone around them, in the best possible way.

The movie starts with a funny tone and then it takes us back to unavoidable reality. Although ending is a bit predictable (if you have not watched , “The fault in our stars”) but you will definitely love the display of emotions, picturization of the scenes, comic timing of SSR.

There are a lot of good elements in the movie, but above all the direction, the heart touching music by AR Rahman sir and the background score  are the best.  The movie is around 110 minutes long, but the background score won’t let you lose interest.

Cast:

1. Lt. Sushant Singh Rajput as Immanuel Rajkumar Jr. or Manny
A fun loving boy, who lost his right leg due to osteosarcoma, but lives life with no regret.

2. Sanjana Sanghi as Kizie Basu
A strong girl living with her parents, fighting Thyroid cancer.

3. Sahil Vaid as JP (supporting role)
Manny’s friend fighting with retinal cancer.

4. Saswata Chatterjee as Kizie’s Father

5. Swastika Mukherjee as Kizie’s Mother

Manny and Kizie

The movie starts with Kizie. It takes us into her normal boring routine and how it get changed after she meets Manny.

The first time they meet, he even makes fun of her name i.e., Kizie  meaning chipku (in hindi). As the story moves forward, they tease each other with words and falls in love with each other. Manny’s comic timing and JP’s one of the best supporting role is a treat to watch.

The later is about how they cope up with their personal struggle to live. Will they ever be together? Will Kizie’s parents accept him? And all these questions will be answered.

My verdict:

Personally speaking I am a big fan of SSR since “Kai Po Che!” and I loved his acting. Even though the ending was quite predictable but the director has done a outstanding work by being able to connect with the audience, supported by the writers ofcourse.

The best dialogue according to me is how he persuaded Kizie’s father to let her go to Paris.

Manny says that when his father said to cut his legs, he said,”papa main basketball kaise khelunga” to which father replied, “Don’t be silly”.

Then he said,”  हो सकता है कि मैं silly था….

(May be I was silly back then but that one decision changed my life. After that even though I played Basketball but it was never the same. Losing was acceptable with my condition. But the point is that even if somehow I managed to win, there wasn’t any pleasure in it.)

With his speech delivery and excellent direction you will surely feel this lines. I would give 9/10 to this movie.

  1. Very nicely written..
I must say I’m happy that Sushant did this one. A huge SRK fan getting to do a old SRKesque sort of an endearing character is a better way to end his beautiful journey.
    Rest easy Sushant🙏
